City Council Approves Improvements On 2 Brookhaven Intersections

The road improvements begin in October.

BROOKHAVEN, GA – At its regular business meeting on Sept. 26, the Brookhaven City Council approved two intersection improvements which begin in October. The council unanimously approved a contract to construct a roundabout at Colonial Drive and Oglethorpe Avenue. This follows two previous measures that were adopted by Council: a resolution approving various traffic calming measures at Brookhaven Heights in 2016, and a recent ordinance on Aug. 14, which funded the construction of the roundabout.

“This is a tremendous improvement for Brookhaven Heights. Traffic calming has been a high priority in this area for a long time and this solution will go a long way to addressing that,” said Councilmember Bates Mattison. “It also shows that the voices in this community have been heard.”

CMEC, LLC was the winning contractor for both projects through a competitive bid process. The total amount for this project is $103,024 and work is expected to begin in October.

Once the Colonial Drive roundabout is completed, CMEC, LLC moves on to the second project: intersection improvements on West Nancy Creek at Ashford Dunwoody Road. These improvements include left turn lanes in both directions on West Nancy Creek and upgraded traffic signals with left turn arrows in every direction of traffic.

“This project is going to keep traffic moving in the busy mornings and afternoons,” said Councilmember Linley Jones. “City staff will be vigilant to ensure a minimum impact to this intersection during the construction process.”

Brookhaven Public Works Director Hari Karikaran explained that the construction schedule was extended to 90 days to avoid congestion and backups during peak travel times.

“The work hours are very limited. Crews will not work between seven to nine in the morning or between 4 and 6 in the afternoon. Crews will only work on one lane at a time, and only move to the next lane after they have finished,” said Karikaran. “The contractor is also required to have flagmen on duty at all times during construction. We will also provide community outreach to let everyone know what is going on.”

Since the adoption of the Ashford Dunwoody Corridor Study in April 2017, Brookhaven has been aggressively implementing the recommendations. Six of the ten short term projects have been completed. This intersection improvement project is the first major intersection improvement project the City is implementing from the Corridor Study.

The 90-day project is expected to begin in late October or early November, following the conclusion of the Colonial Drive roundabout. The total amount for this project is $250,000.
