About Music, Mood Swings and Madness
Robert Schumann was a German composer famed for his concertos, symphonies, chamber works, lieder, and piano music. His personal diaries and biographies of his life also reveal that he experienced manic periods with bursts of creativity followed by crashes, during which he couldn’t compose at all. Today, he would be diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
In this presentation, Dr. Kogan will intersperse piano pieces with stories about the composer’s life, and communicate how Schumann was able to channel his disability into some of the greatest creations in the musical repertoire.
