Patch Poll: What's the Future of Skyland Plaza?

It's one of Brookhaven's oldest strip centers, but nearby redevelopment and its rundown appearance has people wondering about its future.

BROOKHAVEN, GA -- There's a lot of activity going on around Skyland Plaza, one of Brookhaven's oldest strip shopping centers.

The old Bryton Hill Apartments have been razed, and a new, upscale condo complex is being built in its place. Brookhaven and the DeKalb County School System also, just this week, reached an agreement on redeveloping the old Skyland Elementary School (where your editor spent seven years, by the way) into a new school and adjoining park.

But time seems to have passed Skyland Plaza by. Sitting at the intersection of Clairmont Road and Buford Highway, the old complex has seen better days. Much of it is vacant, with AutoZone being its only major anchor retailer. Its corner spot, which once housed a pharmacy and later Action Printing, has been sitting vacant for more than a year.

Its other mainstay, at the far corner, is an outdoor and indoor flea market (and that's being generous).

All of this has us wondering about what, if anything, is in store for Skyland Plaza. While we haven't heard anything about potential buyers, sellers or redevelopment plans, we'd like to know what you think. Take our Patch poll below and tell us what think ought to be done about Skyland Plaza. And be sure to sign up for the Brookhaven Patch newsletter.
