Color and Texture Inspire Buck Created by Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance

1) Tell us about your Buck. 

Our Buck was a collaborative effort of four members of the Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance. Our organization supports and promotes all the fiber arts, and the creative concept reflects this. "Mr. Suave" as he has become known to us, was painted by Leisa Rich and Linda Fetter, his trousers were made from fabric hand woven by Suzi Gough, and his vest was designed and knit by Linda Fetter. The shirt was hand painted by Martha Andreatos, his knit yarn antlers were done by Martha, Suzi and Linda, and Suzi created the yarn ball he is holding, which incorporates the SEFAA logo. The "skirt" around the base is made from a vintage quilt top which Martha edged with tape-measure trim.

2) What inspired you to approach your Buck this way? 

From the beginning we saw this project as an opportunity to introduce the fiber arts to a wide and varied audience. As an organization, it is our mission to showcase the fiber arts and expose the public to this important art medium. Each person on our team worked primarily in their area of expertise, but we bounced ideas off of one another, used suggestions from others visiting the SEFAA Center, and collaborated to push boundaries and to make the Buck an enticing example of the wide range of possibilities inherent to the fiber arts. 

3) In general, where do you find the inspiration for your art?

Sources of inspiration vary with each fiber artist, but are often color or texture. We choose to interpret our inspirations by creating, manipulating and/or embellishing fabric. Since the fiber arts include so many techniques and disciplines - from applique to weaving - we can choose a technique or combination of techniques to achieve an amazing array of esthetics.

4) How did you become an artist? 

Our team of talent includes professionals with degrees and experienced artists with many years of study and practice. All share a common passion for the fiber arts.
