Gucci Mane Sentenced On Weapons Charges

The rapper has been sentenced to 39 months in prison following a guilty plea in May.

An Atlanta rapper will be spending the next three years and three months in federal prison after being sentenced on Wednesday for weapons charges, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia Atlanta Division says.

According to a press release, Gucci Mane, whose real name is Radric Davis, pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon on May 13 of this year. Prosecutors allege that on Sept, 14, 2013 police responded to a call from a concerned friend of Davis’ about his violent behavior. When officers arrived at Davis’ East Atlanta location, they found the rapper walking the street, smelling of marijuana, openly waving around a loaded Glock pistol, and making threatening comments.

Prosecutors added that two days prior to the above incident, police responded to a location in DeKalb County where they discovered Davis waving around a different weapon and making threatening statements.

Davis faced a maximum sentence of ten years’ imprisonment and a $250,000 fine, but pleaded guilty to receive a lesser sentence and fine.

β€œDavis has a long history of violence and of illegally possessing and using guns,” said United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates. β€œOne of our highest priorities is to remove violent repeat offenders from our streets so that our neighborhoods and cities are safer.”

β€œThis sentence is a direct message to criminals that ATF and our law enforcement partners are observant and will not allow violations of our laws to go unpunished, regardless of celebrity status,” said Acting Special Agent in Charge Ray Brown. β€œATF is committed to utilizing the frontline strategy and working with partners to prevent violent crime and ensure that violators are prosecuted and removed from our streets.”

β€œThe proliferation and use of guns by criminals has wreaked havoc on the streets of Atlanta for far too long,” Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said. β€œI hope this sentence sends a strong message that we simply will not tolerate this type of irresponsible, criminal behavior from anyone, regardless of who they are.”
