UPDATE: Kids in Car Discovered Outside Buckhead Grocer

Although both children are fine, their grandmother has been cited in the case.

Update (12:57 p.m.): The Atlanta Police Department has released additional information on the case of two children that were found unattended inside a vehicle at the Buckhead Whole Foods Market.

According to police, an officer responded to the parking lot of the Whole Foods Market on West Paces Ferry Road in reference to a call of children in a vehicle. Upon arriving, the officer discovered a five-year-old and a three-year-old unattended inside a black Ford Probe. The officer noted the windows were down and the door was unlocked. A child safety seat was found to be improperly installed inside the vehicle.

The officer went into the store and found 55-year-old Marlene Wood, the children’s grandmother. Wood did not seem to understand the severity of her actions, stating she was running a quick errand. Wood said she had been in the store without a direct line of sight to her car for around five to 10 minutes. According to Wood, the car seat was improperly installed to allow the three-year-old to leave the vehicle if conditions were too hot.

One of the children complained of being hot, so they were placed in the officer’s patrol car, which had air conditioning. The temperature at the time of the incident was around 77 degrees. Grady Hospital personnel responded to the scene and medically cleared the children.

Wood was given a citation for reckless conduct.
