Man Who Fired Shotgun at Off-Duty Atlanta Cop Sentenced

The officer survived the shooting, but received wounds to his face and leg.

The man who shot and wounded an off-duty Atlanta police officer while the officer was serving as a security guard at an apartment complex was sentenced to prison on Wednesday.

Jermarcus Jordan, 24, received a 25-year sentence in DeKalb County Superior Court, said the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Judge Gregory Adams ordered that Jordan must spend at least 15 years in prison before he becomes eligible for parole.

Atlanta police Officer Christopher Smith was wearing his patrol uniform while sitting in his private automobile during an off-duty shift serving as security at the Edgewood Court Apartments on the evening of Nov. 9, 2013. At approximately 10 p.m., Jordan walked up to Smith’s car and fired a shotgun at it; Smith was wounded in the face and leg and was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Jordan remained a free man until Dec. 24, 2013, when he was arrested following his identification by witnesses and a positive test for gunshot residue on his hands, the AJC said. He was charged with with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, second degree criminal damage to property, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and two probation violations, DeKalb County jail records show.

Smith was treated for his wounds and was released from Grady shortly following the shooting.
