New Atlanta School Police Dept. Missing Dozens of Handguns

The news comes on the eve of Atlanta's new school police department's inauguration. As many as 30 Glock handguns are reported to be missing.

Atlanta, GA -- This isn't exactly the way a new police department is supposed to get underway.

One day before Atlanta's new school police department is set to be sworn in, reports are that the department is missing as many as 30 Glock handguns, worth between $12,000 to $15,000.

In February, the Atlanta Public School System announced plans for its own police department. On Thursday, a chief of police and 67 personnel will be sworn in, with the new department beginning full operation on July 1.

Now, Channel 2 Action News is reporting that Atlanta police are investigating a possible theft of the guns, which were purchased by the district.

The .40 caliber Glock semi-automatics retail for about $450 each. Police say an anonymous tip came in to the school system about their possible theft.
