Streetcar Route Through Buckhead Faces Local Opposition

Area residents and business leaders who fought against the idea of a streetcar along Peachtree Road several years ago could fight again.

Plans to route a streetcar line through Buckhead to Lenox Square Mall are not sitting well with some residents and businesspeople, including a former mayor who is now the head of the Buckhead Coalition.

According to BuckheadView, an Atlanta BeltLine executive gave presentation on the so-called β€œCrosstown Peachtree Line” to the Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods last Thursday. The line would run from Fort McPherson to Lenox Square Mall, partially along Peachtree Road.

Former Atlanta mayor and current Buckhead Coalition President Sam Massell has long been against such a line, telling BuckheadView that the constant installation of metal plates on the road would prevent streetcars from using it. Likewise, community members railed against a proposed streetcar line on Peachtree Road during the Connect Atlanta Plan public hearing process several years ago.

The BeltLine representative said during the May 14 meeting that the construction of the Buckhead line would hinge on funding and community interest.
