Trauma Kit Donations Spurred by Buckhead Organization Reach Five Digits

The $50 trauma kits are being given to front-line Atlanta police officers and are being bought through donations to the Buckhead Coalition.

Just one month into its donation drive to purchase trauma kits for Atlanta police officers, the Buckhead Coalition has announced that $18,000 has been raised for the cause.

BuckheadView reports that the Buckhead Coalition, the Midtown Alliance, and Central Atlanta Progress have made donations and have received donations from law firms, city council members, hotel organizations, and law firms. The donations will go towards purchasing the $50 trauma kits, which can be essential to saving the lives of police officers wounded in the line of duty.

Sam Massell, former mayor and current president of the coalition, says that two out of every three officer deaths are due to a loss of blood after trauma, a situation which the trauma packs can help avert. A trauma pack has saved the life of former St. Croix police chief Christopher Howell, who was shot multiple times in the line of duty.

The Trauma Plate Pack, obtained from a California firm (Officer Survival Solutions, OSS), contains a hemostatic gauze, SWAT-T Tactical Wrap Tourniquet, OSS Combat Compression Dressing, pair of tactical nitrile gloves, and a field application card. The trauma kits are in specially-designed β€œskip packs” and have a three-year shelf-life. A pilot program distributed thirty packs for Buckhead, thirty for Midtown, and thirty for Downtown, in an introductory program for a city-wide coverage budget estimated at approximately $75,000.
