24 Bartow Students Advance In Governor's Honors Program

The four-week summer program is designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented students a chance to learn new skills.

From Bartow Co. Schools: Twenty-four Bartow County students hope to trade in their summer pool passes for the ultimate ticket; entry into one of Georgia’s most touted, vetted, and in the words of many participants, “life-changing” programs.

The Georgia Governor’s Honors Program is a four-week, summer residential program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented sophomores and juniors new and challenging educational opportunities in a unique setting on the campus of Berry College. Teachers, counselors, and principals from each of our three high schools worked together this year to nominate the best of the best in different areas, including Agricultural Science, Communicative Arts, Dance, Engineering, Mathematics, Music, Science, Social Studies, Theatre, Visual Arts, and World Language.

Applications were then turned over to a district-level committee, and students were extensively interviewed. Judges looked at academic records, volunteer efforts, and interview skills, among other sectors. Out of more than seventy applications, five students were selected from Adairsville High School, eight from Cass High School, and eleven from Woodland High School. These students hope to be interviewed at the statewide level in January or February. Winners will be announced in March. Our passionate, gifted students often brave the highly selective application process because they are hungry for new ideas found outside of the classroom. Through the Governor’s Honors Program, these students also gain a higher level of confidence and build lifelong friendships.

“I am thrilled and honored to see such a talented group of students represent the Bartow County School System. I’m confident we will see these 2017 district nominees become strong innovative thinkers and leaders in our community,” said Paula Camp, the Governor’s Honors Program Coordinator.

The rigorous program is fully funded by the Georgia General Assembly and operates at no cost to participants.
