Bartow Students Named Governor's Honors Program Finalists

The program helps students excel in intellectual curiosity as well as preparing them for post secondary work.

From Bartow County Schools: After a year-long grueling process, five Bartow County students can officially say they are in the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program! They are trading in their summer pool passes for the ultimate ticket; entry into one of Georgia’s most touted, vetted, and in the words of many participants, “life-changing” programs. Congratulations to Woodland High School juniors Banta Sesay (Music: Trumpet) and Peter Germ (Science), Cass High School juniors Jenna Keeler (Communicative Arts) and Brianna “Necole” Gonsahn (Social Studies), and homeschool student Sarah Huffman (Dance).

“Each year I am blown away by the talent and passion that our students display in their area of academic study,” says Paula Camp, the Bartow County GHP coordinator. “I am truly blessed to be able to take part in this program as our students ‘shine.’ The culmination of this lengthy process is a definite reflection of our wonderful students, their parents, our community, teachers, and schools. Dedication and hard work pays off and contributes to success! Bartow County could not be prouder of all of our candidates this year.” Earning the title of GHP Finalist comes with several benefits when attaining a post-secondary education. Patrick Winter, the associate vice president for undergraduate admissions and enrollment management at the University of Georgia, tells the Bartow County School System, “The program exposes students to a rigorous classroom environment that serves as good preparation for post-secondary work. Admissions decisions are made with the consideration of a number of academic, extracurricular and contextual factors. Participation in GHP is one of many great ways that students can demonstrate intellectual curiosity and a desire to excel."

More than 1,600 semifinalists from across Georgia participated in state interviews this year and approximately 650 students were named finalists on March 30, 2018. The Georgia Governor’s Honors Program is a four-week, summer residential program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented sophomores and juniors new and challenging educational opportunities in a unique setting on the campus of Berry College. The program is offered June 17-July 14 and fully funded by the Georgia General Assembly.
