Cartersville, Bartow County Awarded Recreation Grants

Local projects include a boat ramp for the Etowah River Trail, LED lighting for 2 parks and improvements to Dellinger Park.

CARTERSVILLE, GA -- The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has awarded more than 30 recreation grants to entities across the state, including $1.14 million from the Recreational Trails Program and $1.49 million from Land and Water Conservation Fund.

Two of those grants were awarded to the city of Cartersville and Bartow County.

Bartow received $100,000 in recreational trail funding for a boat ramp on the Etowah River Trail at Hardin Bridge and $48,300 in Land and Water Conservation Funds to install LED lighting at Hamilton Crossing and Manning Mill parks.

The city of Cartersville was warded $100,000 in Land and Water Conservation Funds for replace the picnic shelter and pavilion at Dellinger Park.

The selected projects will provide new outdoor recreation opportunities for a wide variety of user groups, from hikers to ball players, the state agency said.

“We know how important it is to these communities to have access to funding for recreational projects,” said DNR Commissioner Mark Williams. “We are honored to be able to administer these grants which allow our citizens to enjoy a variety of recreation, from riverside trails to fishing piers to soccer fields.”

DNR administers the Recreational Trails Program under the guidance of the Federal Highway Administration and offers awards through a competitive grant program. The program funds hiking, biking and horseback trails, canoe and kayak launches, and trails for motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles and off-road light trucks.

Agencies of state, federal and local governments, plus authorized commissions, are eligible to compete. Every recipient is required to match the grant by providing at least 20 percent of the cost of the project.

DNR also administers Land and Water Conservation Fund grants on behalf of the U.S. Department of the Interior. This program was established by Congress in 1964 to fulfill a commitment to safeguard natural areas, water resources and cultural heritage, and to provide recreation opportunities to all Americans.
