"I am honored and truly humbled to be able to serve and participate in the Presidential Inauguration," she said. "I retire in April 2018 so this will be my first and last opportunity to serve as an active duty member for this type of event; I want to do my part to help ensure a successful transition and memorable experience for all."

The armed forces have participated in the inauguration of the United States president since April 30, 1789, when members of the U.S. Army, local militia units and Revolutionary War veterans escorted George Washington to his first inauguration ceremony at Federal Hall in New York City, DVIDS said.

More than 220 years later, the participation of the armed forces continues to honor the commander in chief, recognize civilian control of the armed forces and celebrate democracy.

Participation by the U.S. Armed Forces traditionally includes musical units, color guards, salute batteries and honor cordons.

DVIDS works to "provides a timely, accurate and reliable connection between the media around the world and the military serving at home and abroad."
