Community Remembers Cartersville Officer Killed In Wreck

​Family and friends gathered at Owen Funeral Home​​​ Monday to say goodbye to a Cartersville police officer killed in an off duty crash

CARTERSVILLE, GA—Family and friends gathered at Owen Funeral Home Monday to say goodbye to a Cartersville police officer killed in an off duty vehicle crash last week.

Sarah Elizabeth Barnes, 32, died in a car crash on Jan. 30. She had been a member for the Cartersville Police Department for two years.

After Monday's visitation, a "Celebration of Life" service took place at Sam Jones United Methodist Church in Cartersville.

"Please keep Sarah’s family in your prayers," the police department recently wrote on its official Facebook page.

According to her obituary, Barnes leaves behind a husband and five children. In her spare time, she enjoyed writing and had long-term aspirations of becoming an investigative journalist. Her service to others began as a lifeguard and later a sailor in the U.S. Navy reserves.

"She made a difference in the lives of others and was committed to a life in service of others," her obituary reads. "Sarah was passionate and lived life fully. She had a colorful personality, was fun to be with and was devoted to her family."

Shortly after passing, the community adorned Barnes' police cruiser with flowers and balloons. In front of her patrol car at the police department is currently a sign that reads, "God speed, Officer Barnes." A billboard that reads "In loving memory - Officer Sarah Beth Barnes" is also up along Hwy. 41.

Memorial donations may be made in Barnes' honor to Tunnel 2 Towers at www.tunnel2towers.or. The organization honors military & first responders who made the supreme sacrifice of life and limb.
