Here are the top stories in Cartersville today:

  1. The Cartersville City Council began its Jan. 5 meeting with the municipal court judge and the associate municipal court judge being sworn in. The city water department's request to enter an agreement with a recruiting firm to fill an open engineering position was approved by the council. The Council also heard a request to purchase two electronic traffic message boards "to be used by our police department and other various departments as needed to place messages around the city," said Cartersville Assistant City Manager Freddy Morgan.   2. The Bartow County Library System's Cartersville branch will be hosting The William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum's 'Eighteen Artifacts: Story of Jewish Atlanta' exhibit. The touring display features 20 panels and will run Jan. 12 through Feb. 15. Emory University's visiting assistant professor of Holocaust and Antisemitism Studies at the Tam Institute for Jewish Studies/Department of Religion Alicja Podbielska will launch the exhibit with a presentation on Jan. 12th at the Cartersville Public Library from 6 to 7 p.m. (Subscription: The Daily Tribune News)
  3. Steve Stewart, Bartow County Tax Commissioner, has released the changes and deadlines to apply for the Senior School Tax homestead exemptions for this year. Approved by voters in the November general election, homeowners who are 65 years or older are eligible for a $60,000 exemption, 75 years or older are eligible for an $80,000 exemption and 80 years old or older are eligible for a full exemption up to $200,000.
