Here are the top three stories in Cartersville today:

  1. A defendant has been charged for the second time on the same child molestation offenses. His first trial ended in a mistrial, requested by his defense team on the basis that "an investigator failed to produce some evidence" on time, but had been presented at a later time. His defense team now claims the prosecution is subjecting the defendant to 'double jeopardy' by charging him again. Cherokee Judicial Circuit Judge Rosemary Greene denied the motion to dismiss the charges based on'double jeopardy.' (Subscription: The Daily Tribune News)
  2. On Wednesday morning, officers attempted to stop a Florida man "leaving the Target parking lot on the wrong side of the highway at a high rate of speed," but the man fled. After ending the chase near Highland Rivers, the man admitted to have stolen items from Target to purchase drugs. He was arrested and charged with "possession of a schedule I controlled substance, fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, reckless driving, driving on the wrong side of the road, speeding and failure to obey a traffic control device." (WRGA)
  3. The Bartow County Board of Elections and Voter Registration's meeting on Feb. 20 was brief but informative. Elections Supervisor Joseph Kirk informed board members of the total of registered voters, which at this time, exceeds 83,000. Kirk and Assistant Elections Supervisor Cheryl Billard gave an update on the advance voting days and election day for the upcoming mayoral election in White. Dates for the expected new voting software and "municipal election process and list maintenance timelines" were also provided. (Subscription: The Daily Tribune News)
