Contractor Suffers Burns In Explosion at Plant Bowen

An explosion at Plant Bowen near Cartersville sent one person to an area hospital for treatment.

Bartow County Emergency Medical Services responded to the plant around 9:24 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27 to assist a male patient with burns to both arms, said spokesperson Brad Cothran.

Cothran added the patient has been transported by emergency crews to a Cobb County hospital for treatment.

Georgia Power spokesperson John Kraft said the patient, who is a contractor, was performing ”offline maintenance of electrical equipment at the facility when he experienced burns due to an apparent electrical flash.”

Officials at the plant are working to determine the cause of the event, Georgia Power added.

“There is no danger to the public or other employees at the plant,” Kraft said. “The safety of our employees and neighbors is our top priority.”

According to Georgia Power, Plant Bowen is the country’s “ninth-largest power plant in net generation of electricity.” It began commercially operating in 1975, and is located nine miles southwest of Cartersville. It has about 400 employees.
