Famous 'Hugging Pups' Find Forever Home

After months in a foster home, Kala and Keira have finally been adopted.

The famous pair of dogs who were captured engaging in a candid moment at a Cartersville, Ga., animal shelter have finally found a place they can call home.

Kala and Keira were adopted by two longtime friends and roommates, Angels Among Us said on its Facebook page.

The women said they saw the dogs’ story in People magazine and felt an immediate connection to the two dogs.

One of the roommates had recently lost her two elderly dogs when she saw the magazine’s story and realized the hugging pups were still available.

“It just fell together,” she explained. “We turned our tears into smiles with these two young, playful dogs.”

Kala and Keira were at the Cartersville-based Bartow County Animal Shelter when that famous photo was taken by an employee with the Etowah Valley Humane Society. The organization posted the photo on its Facebook page, and Angels Among Us shared the photo with followers.

The photo of Kala, the now 11-month old hound mix, hugging Keira, a 15-month-old boxer mix, tugged at the hearts of many residents and landed the pair in a foster family.

In July, Kala and Keira were both diagnosed with parvovirus, a highly contagious virus that usually affects puppies and younger dogs.

Angels Among Us said the parents of Kala and Keira are working on creating a special Facebook page “that will keep folks engaged with Hugging Dogs and hopefully raise additional money to help Angels Rescue save other dogs in Georgia’s high kill shelters.”
