Fire Destroys Animal Shelter in Gordon County

Fire department officials say two cats died, but all 23 dogs housed at the facility survived the blaze.

GORDON COUNTY, GA -- A fire ripped through and destroyed a north Georgia animal shelter Wednesday evening, leaving about two dozen dogs without a home.

The fire was reported late into the evening on April 12 at the Gordon County Animal Shelter on Harris Beamer Road in Calhoun, the Gordon County Fire & Rescue Department said.

According to the agency, there were a total of 23 dogs that were housed at the facility, and all of them were accounted for. A total of 20 have been taken in either by the Calhoun Animal Shelter or shelter volunteers, but three of the pups ran off during the quest to extinguish the blaze.
