Former State Probation Officer Charged With Sexual Assault
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation began its investigation in June 2016.

DALTON, GA -- A former probation officer has been arrested following a nine-month investigation into whether he had an inappropriate relationship with a person under his supervision.
A Whitfield County grand jury recently indicted Aldo F. Avila on one count of sexual assault of a probationer or parolee, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.
Avila was arrested in Dalton on Friday, March 3 and booked into the Whitfield County Jail.

The GBI was contacted by the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Department of Community Supervision to investigate allegations of an inappropriate relationship between Avila and a probationer he was overseeing.
The investigation was conducted by the GBI's Calhoun office and the file was turned over to Conasauga Judicial Circuit District Attorney Bert Poston, who presented the case to the grand jury.

This is the second instance in nearly two months in which a probation officer has been charged with having an inappropriate relationship with individuals they are tasked with supervising.
In January, Calhoun resident and former state probation officer Anyoel Cordovi was charged by the state agency with two felony counts of sexual assault by persons with supervisory or disciplinary authority and one felony count of violation of oath of office.
GBI spokesperson Rich Bahan said Avila, who is no longer an employee with the Georgia Department of Community Supervision, has since bonded out of jail.
