GDOT Awards Contract To Resurface I-75 In Northwest Georgia

This project would resurface I-75 in Gordon and Whitfield counties. A similar project for I-75 in Bartow County could begin this summer.

CALHOUN, GA — Work could soon begin on a project to resurface Interstate 75 between Calhoun and Dalton in northwest Georgia. That's because the Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to Marietta-based C.W. Matthew Contracting Company to perform the work.

The $37.6 million contract calls for resurfacing the 19-mile portion of the interstate from Ga. 165/Redbud Road in Gordon County to just north of Tibbs Road in Whitfield County, GDOT said.

"This project and others like it in northwest Georgia add up to these two things: better mobility and a better quality of life for all the area’s residents," said Dewayne Comer, district engineer at the Georgia DOT office in Cartersville.

The project is expected to wrap up by the end of March 2019. Details about construction and lane closure schedules will be released before work begins.

Georgia Department of Transportation spokesperson Mohamed Arafa also said the agency has not forgotten about the stretch of Interstate 75 that runs through Bartow County. A contract to resurface the interstate from Glade Road to the Chatsworth Highway/Exit 293 interchange could be awarded later this month.

The push to resurface I-75 in Bartow follows complaints from scores of residents who said the deteriorating asphalt has damaged their cars and windshields.

Once the contract is awarded, a notice to proceed will be issued. Arafa said resurfacing could occur during the summer construction season. A projected completion date will be finalized once the contract is awarded, he added.
