German Grocery Chain To Open Regional Headquarters in Cartersville

CARTERSVILLE, GA -- One of the world's largest retailers has announced plans to create 250 jobs and invest $100 million over the next five years in a new regional headquarters and distribution center in Bartow County.

On Monday, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal said Lidl will bring its operations to Cartersville.

Melinda Lemmon, executive director of the Cartersville-Bartow Department of Economic Development, said Lidl will build their operations on roughly 89.4 acres in the Highland 75 Industrial Park. The regional headquarters will be located on the west side of Great Valley Parkway just south of Cass-Pine Log Road.

Lidl opened its first 10 stores in the U.S. on June 15. By next summer, it plans to open up to 100 stores along the East Coast and create 5,000 jobs.

The Cartersville facility will be the company’s fourth regional headquarters and distribution center. The three remaining centers are located in Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland. Cartersville Mayor Matt Santini said he's "extremely pleased" to welcome Lidle to Cartersville.

“Their investment in our community is greatly appreciated as are the quality jobs that come along with it," he added. "Our city and county work together to provide an atmosphere that is conducive for quality businesses to locate and thrive, and this latest project is no exception. We are also grateful to our local JDA (Joint Development Authority) team and the state of Georgia Economic Development team for their partnership in bringing Lidl to Cartersville.”

Georgia Department of Economic Development Director of International Investment Nico Wijnberg represented the Global Commerce division in partnership with Georgia Power and the Bartow-Cartersville Second Joint Development Authority.

Lidl operates more than 10,000 stores in 28 countries, offering customers the highest quality fresh produce, meat, bakery items and a wide array of household products at the lowest possible prices. It opened its first store in Germany in 1973, and later expanded its footprint into France and the United Kingdom, according to its website. It first established its U.S. headquarters in June 2015.
