I-75 Resurfacing Project Starts April 23 In Cobb County

Bartow County motorists are reminded to pack their patience and expect delays over the next several months.

COBB COUNTY, GA — Crews working for the Georgia Department of Transportation will soon begin a major resurfacing project along a stretch of Interstate 75 in Cobb County.

About 11 miles on the interstate from the Chattahoochee River at the Fulton County just north of Allgood Road in Cobb County, I-285 eastbound from I-75 to just west of the Chattahoochee River bridge and all the ramps and collector-distributor lanes not included in the Northwest Corridor Express Lanes project will be resurfaced.

This project is designed to address the deteriorating condition of the roadway’s surface, GDOT said Friday. Crews will begin work on Monday, April 23 on I-75 northbound to the Cumberland Boulevard exit ramp. Motorists traveling on I-75 northbound to that exit will be directed to use the Windy Hill Road interchange and get back on I-75 southbound to access Cumberland Boulevard. Variable message boards will be in place to route traffic.

“We strongly advise motorists to be prepared, plan ahead and know before you go,” said Georgia DOT Metro District Engineer Kathy Zahul. “This highly anticipated resurfacing project will create a smoother and safer ride for all commuters. We ask motorists to please pardon our progress and pack your patience while on the road.”

Throughout the project and due to the nature of the work, some interstate on-and off-ramps may be closed temporarily and detours implemented. In addition, the resurfacing on I-75 will require intermittent single, double and triple lane closures to allow the work to progress efficiently while ensuring driver and worker safety. To minimize delays, most lane closures will be restricted to nighttime and weekend hours.

The I-75 resurfacing project is valued at $34.8 million and the work is expected to wrap up by February 2019. The project is a joint venture between C.W. Matthews Contracting Company, Inc. and E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc.

As always, motorists traveling in the area are reminded to reduce their speeds in the work zone. Motorists are also encouraged to wear seatbelts, eliminate distractions behind the wheel, and plan their routes before getting on the road by calling 511 for real-time information on work status and traffic conditions.

“Work zones serve as the workplace for GDOT workers and contractors," Zahul added. "It is vitally important that they are safe and able to return home to their families as they carry out their duties."
