Motorcyclist Dies After Crashing Into Cartersville Home

Police say the man, who was suspected of being intoxicated, refused to stop when an officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

Cartersville, GA -- A man accused of fleeing officers who tried to initiate a traffic stop died from his injuries when he crashed into a house overnight in Cartersville.

The initial chase began around 12:52 a.m. Jan. 9 when an officer with the Cartersville Police Department “observed multiple traffic violations” that indicated the operator of the motorcycle was possibly intoxicated, said spokerspson Lt. Mike Bettikofer.

The officer observed the motorcyclist on West Avenue and Henderson Drive, and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the operator. However, the driver continued on its path along West Avenue and refused to pull over, Bettikofer said.

According to an incident report released by Cartersville police, the motorcycle operator was “traveling at a rate of speed that was too great for the driver to control” once he reached the intersection of West Avenue and Etowah Drive.

The operator crossed over the sidewalk and crashed into a home at 48 Etowah Drive, the agency said. The incident reports states the driver was thrown from the bike and “came to a rest on the side porch of the residence.”

The operator, a 39-year-old man from Calhoun, was transported to Cartersville Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, Bettikofer said.
