Here are the top stories in Cartersville today:
- The city of White's recent special mayoral election "was the first in Bartow County under the new Georgia Registered Voter Information System (GARViS)," said Bartow County Elections Supervisor Joseph Kirk. "From the voters' perspective, there's not a whole lot of change there. Besides a more a stable system for larger elections … now we can check in voters in less than a minute." - A 55-year-old Cartersville man has been convicted of aggravated battery. He was accused of the assault to his sister after she allegedly struck his camper with her ATV. "Every single person testified that the second time she came back to the camper, he threw her to the ground, straddled her and relentlessly beat her in the face," said District Attorney Roxanna Satterfield. The accused is expected to be sentenced on April 17 in Bartow Superior Court. (Subscription: The Daily Tribune News)
- Appointed in 1989 as the first African-American Justice to serve on the Supreme Court of Georgia, Chief Justice Robert Benham's portrait "by artist Carol Baxter Kirby" will be unveiled in a special ceremony today. The Cartersville native "also served in the U.S. Army Reserve, attaining the rank of Captain." (wbhfradio.org)
