Review: Tokyo Japanese Steak & Sushi
Hibachi style cooking is fun for the whole family!
Tokyo Japanese Steak & Sushi offers traditional Japanese food and hibachi style cooking. Recently, I went for dinner with my son to see what the restaurant has to offer.
The restaurant was bustling when we arrived at 7 p.m. on a Friday. The interior was clean and tastefully decorated. Though there were large hibachi grills running, the air was comfortably cool and clear of smoke. We sat near the grills because my toddler was mesmerized by the chefs’ cooking demonstrations. A few other families with children were also seated along the grills. If you are looking for a fun and interactive dining experience you can have with your children, I suggest bringing them to this restaurant.
The menu includes appetizers, hibachi dinners for individuals and groups, traditional Japanese entrees, a large sushi menu, a children’s menu and more. All dinners are served with soup, salad, mixed vegetables and steamed or fried rice.

To get a sense of the pricing, the least expensive appetizer is the Edamame ($3.95) and the most expensive is the Tuna Tataki (seared tuna with vinegar sauce, $13.95). The Triple Tokyo Dinner for Two (New York Steak, chicken and shrimp, $47.95) is the most expensive item on the menu but it serves two. The Lobster Dinner is $29.95 but that only serves one. Most entrées are around $20.
There are specials running every day, offering some of the more expensive menu items at a discount. I took advantage of the New York Steak and Shrimp special for $15.99. Other specials that were available on the night I dined included Sesame Chicken Dinner ($10.99), Teriyaki Chicken Dinner ($11.99), and New York Steak and Chicken ($14.99).

My soup and salad arrived first. The soup was a chicken broth soup with two noodle spirals on the bottom. The salad was made of iceberg lettuce, carrots and red cabbage and was topped with a ginger dressing. The soup was salty and warm, which is exactly what I was anticipating. The vegetables in the salad were fresh but the dressing was a little heavy. Unlike most ginger dressings I’ve had at other Japanese restaurants, which are rather light and thin, I think this one was made with a mayonnaise base.
My entrée arrived next. The steak, chicken and mixed vegetables were prepared on the hibachi grill and had a traditional hibachi flavor. I’m not sure exactly what was added but I tasted soy sauce, pepper and butter. I have to admit, the vegetables were the best part of my meal. I loved the variety of the vegetables (onions, carrots, broccoli, zucchini and mushrooms) but felt the meat and seafood were a little overcooked and bland. That said, we had a fun time watching our food get prepared and that alone was worth the price of the entree!
I was more than pleased with the service and had a fun time dining at Tokyo Japanese Steak & Seafood. I will be returning to sample the sushi menu in the near future!
