Here are the top three stories in Cartersville today:

  1. Cartersville area resident Bruce Thompson was sworn in as the tenth commissioner of labor for the state of Georgia. Commissioner Thompson previously represented Georgia's 14th district in the State Senate before running for the office of labor commissioner. (Georgia Department of Labor)
  2. Back in October, two Atlanta residents were arrested for entering auto crimes at Sam Smith Park and the Pine Mountain Trail System. Weeks later, reports were still being received of autos being broken into at the same parks. Investigators determined that an associate of the original perpetrators was the individual responsible for the continued break-ins. On Wednesday, Jan. 11, investigators received a report of an auto being broken into at Sam Smith Park. Investigators located the perpetrators' vehicle and attempted a stop, but the vehicle eluded officers at a high rate of speed onto I-75. After a brief pursuit, the vehicle crashed into the median wall, which was the cause of the I-75 shutdown on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Two Atlanta women were taken into custody and charged with numerous entering auto, fraud and traffic related charges. (The Cartersville Police Department via Facebook)
  3. The Cartersville City Schools Board of Education's first meeting of 2023 saw school board president Kelley Dial re-elected to her position. Dial is the chief assistant public defender of the Office of the Public Defender for the Cherokee Judicial Circuit and has served on the school board since 2000.
