Traffic Shift Planned For U.S. 41 In Bartow County

The temporary shift, set for June 12, is needed to accommodate work on the demolition of the southbound bridge over Pettit Creek.

CARTERSVILLE, GA — The Georgia Department of Transportation is warning Bartow County motorists that a temporary traffic shift will take place next week along U.S. 41/Joe Frank Harris Parkway.

The shift will occur between Massell Drive SE and Evans Hightower Road in Cartersville on Tuesday, June 12. It will move traffic onto the temporary northbound lanes at the bridge over Pettit Creek and the southbound traffic onto the old northbound lanes to accommodate work on the demolition of the southbound bridge over Pettit Creek.

GDOT says the traffic shift will begin at 9 a.m. and will be removed at 4 p.m. It will then transform into a detour from 7 p.m. June 12 to 6 a.m. Wednesday, June 13. Traffic is expected to return to its normal configuration by 9 a.m. This construction operation and traffic shift it necessitates are permitting and subject to change.

The bridge work is part of a 1-mile project of widening and reconstruction on U.S. 41/S.R. 3. The project also includes the construction of the bridges over CSX Railroad, U.S. 411 and Pettit Creek. Work on this project kicked off in September 2014, and is expected to be completed by Feb. 5, 2020, at a construction cost of $31.5 million.

“We certainly hope that all motorists watch out for this traffic shift and be extra cautious, while approaching this work zone,” said DeWayne Comer, district engineer at the DOT office in Cartersville. “This project may be causing the public some inconvenience, but upon completion, it will improve the flow of traffic in the area, make it safer, and help the public get where they need to go in Cartersville and Bartow County."

The Georgia Department of Transportation continues its 2018 construction program. Dozens of important roadway improvement projects are ongoing this summer throughout northwest Georgia as crews work to deliver projects on time and on budget while keeping the state's transportation network the nation’s finest. Pardon the necessary inconvenience and please drive cautiously and safely at all times, especially in work zones.
