Here are the top three stories in Cartersville today:

  1. Plans have been approved but no ground has been broken yet on Cartersville's Varsity. The Varsity will be bringing one of its new locations to Cartersville in front of Tractor Supply, across from the Savoy Auto Museum. Activity on Cartersville's numerous projects have not slowed down, even with rising interest rates. The Cartersville restaurant will include up to 4,500 square feet with a $2.25 million estimated construction value. (Northwest Georgia News)
  2. North Georgia Tire Services, on Criss Black Road NW, burned for more than 12 hours starting late Saturday night and has been deemed to be a total loss. Nearly two dozen firefighters worked through the night and were still on the scene Monday to put out flames in hard to reach areas. No injuries have been reported and arson is not suspected, but officials are still working to determine what caused the fire. (Free: WSB Radio; Subscription: Daily Tribune)
  3. The July 21 meeting consisted mostly of bid awards and contract agreements. The council also voted to approve a new two-hour parking ordinance amendment. The council also heard a first reading of a proposed ordinance amendment that would allow higher alcohol content spirits to be served in specialty shops, but took no official voting action. Applicants are also requesting the ability to sell distilled spirits, but are currently only permitted to serve wine and craft beer. (Subscription: Daily Tribune)
