Here are the top stories in Cartersville today:
- Mardi Gras benefit for Red Door Pantry: Cartersville's Episcopal Church and its Red Door Pantry helped over 20,000 individuals in 2022. They are hoping to raise the funds to help even more this year with their annual Mardi Gras event. This year's event is already sold out, but you can still contribute. Head over to their Facebook page and vote for the Mardi Grad King and Queen. $1 is equal to one vote. (Subscription: The Daily Tribune News; Free: Red Door Pantry via Facebook)
- Plea deal leads to charges dropped: A 48-year-old Cartersville man, who was initially charged with aggravated assault, had that charge dropped as part of a negotiated plea deal. The plea deal gave him a two year probation sentence and allowed for time already served to run concurrent with the other charges he was facing; a weapons charge from 2019 and a battery charge from 2020. The defendant was also ordered to pay a fine. (Daily Tribune News)
- Resolution proposes making superintendents elected officials: State Representative Mitchell Scoggins (R-Cartersville) has sponsored a resolution that would allow individual Georgia counties to choose if they would like to elect their school superintendent or allow the position to be filled by nomination. Bartow County currently appoints a county school superintendent nominated by the school board. If the resolution becomes a bill and is approved, expect to see it on Georgia's ballots in 2024. "This resolution does not require every county to hold a referendum, it only allows them the opportunity to do so if desired," Scoggins said. (Subscription: The Daily Tribune News)
