1. Small group, big impact: Day of Giving helps groups who help kids in Columbus (ledger-enquirer.com) — A small Columbus service club just turned plant sales and volunteer hours into $33,500 for 20 local youth charities, more than doubling last year's giving. The Optimist Club of Columbus and nonprofits like Scarlett's Closet are channeling that money into support for children facing cancer, medical emergencies, and everyday challenges, all with the goal of making Columbus better for its kids.
2. US attorney warns fentanyl risk ahead of National Fentanyl Awareness Day (wtvm.com) — Federal prosecutors are warning Columbus families that fentanyl is now so common in illegal drugs that even first-time experimentation can be deadly. The U.S. Attorney urges parents and educators here to talk frankly with kids about avoiding all street drugs, noting harsh federal penalties for large-scale dealers as authorities push to keep Georgia communities safer.
3. More than football: Calvary Christian's newest assistant coach is just 11-years-old (wtvm.com) — On the Calvary Christian football sidelines in Columbus, 11-year-old Eli Roberts is starting his first season as an assistant head coach after a stroke and mild cerebral palsy kept him from playing. Supported by head coach Emmanuel Brunson, teammates, and his mom, Eli now leads, encourages players, and finally feels like "one of the boys" at every game.
4. Albany Museum of Art Summer Exhibitions Enter Final Days (albanyceo.com) — An Albany Museum of Art exhibit is showcasing Columbus photographer and Columbus State professor Rylan Steele's long-running series documenting his son's journey from childhood to adolescence. Columbus readers can still catch his solo show, alongside several Albany-focused history exhibits, before they close on August 29. Admission is free, making it an easy regional arts trip.
5. Savannah Corps History (salvationarmyusa.org) — Georgia's Salvation Army story includes Columbus, where a Corps opened in 1895 as part of the organization's early statewide expansion. Today, the network of Corps, service centers, shelters, and thrift stores across Georgia continues providing food, housing, youth programs, and disaster relief, funded largely by community donations that mostly go straight into services.
