Brother and sister Briggs and Jennifer Lawler were recently named Dacula Elementary's Reader of the Year for each of their respective grade divisions. Any teacher may nominate only one student for the annual award, which is given to recognize outstanding readers in the K-2nd grade and 3rd-5th grade levels. Nominated students write an essay about why reading is important to them. Teachers also submit their own essay detailing why that student is an exceptional reader, based upon quality, quantity and variety of material the student reads. A review panel selects one winner per division per school. Those winners then compete with those selected from other schools to be named Gwinnett Reader of the Year. An awards ceremony will recognize all school-level winners on March 22. Dacula Elementary educates approximately 1500 students and has faculty/staff of 163.
Simply being nominated is a significant honor. Imagine how proud parents, David and Lauren Lawler, were when 5th grader, Briggs (age 10) and 2nd grader, Jennifer (age 8) both took top honors at Dacula Elementary. "We were excited about the nominations and were floored that they were chosen to represent Dacula!" says beaming dad, David.
Lauren adds, "I am thrilled that they both love to read. It's a fundamental part of their education and they come by it naturally; we are a family of readers."
