It's been pretty dry lately, especially after the monsoon season left us. Recently, we been under the influence of a large ridge of high pressure over the central part of the country that's kept the moisture and rain away. Sunny, dry, and hot has been the weather. But... don't get use to it just yet. Things are beginning to change a little, beginning tomorrow.
Before we talk about the upcoming weather, I need to say a little something about the tropics. Normally this time of year we would have had some major tropical storms or even a hurricane, but so far, not much of anything. This is going to be only the sixth year since 1960 we haven't had a hurricane before August 31st.
Here are the first dates and hurricanes those years:
- Gustav Sept. 11, 2002
- Erin, Sept. 9, 2001
- Debby, Sept. 2, 1988
- Diana, Sept. 10, 1984
- Arlene, Sept. 3, 1967
Now... our upcoming weather.
Here are a few excerpts from the latest Forecast Discussion from the Atlanta NWS:
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PEACHTREE CITY GA 353 PM EDT WED AUG 28 2013 .SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/... STILL APPEARS THE REST OF AFTERNOON AND EVENING WILL BE FREE OF ANY PRECIP. WILL NOT BE SO FORTUNATE THE REST OF THE WEEK AS LOW LEVEL MOISTURE CONTINUES TO INCREASE. AMOUNT OF MOISTURE QUITE IMPRESSIVE WITH SFC DEWPOINTS IN THE LOW TO MID 70S AND PW VALUES NEARING OR EXCEEDING 2.00 IN. COULD EASILY GO BACK INTO RAINY PATTERN IF THIS KIND OF MOISTURE PERSISTS AND STRONG NW FLOW OR STORM SYSTEMS TRACK OVER THE AREA.
Our rain chances begin today and continue on through at least Tuesday/Wednesday of next week. We've been very lucky this year with below normal temperatures. Now that we're heading into September, it will only continue to get better. After next week, and unless another big ridge of high pressure plops itself over the southeast, I think we're done with 90's this year. Fingers crossed....
