According to a Gwinnett Police incident report, the officer heard the calls as he was outside the Stars & Strikes around 1 a.m. on March 22, waiting for another officer who works part-time at the business.

The officer wrote in the report the closer he got to the sewer grate, the louder the calls became.

A woman nearby, identified as the man’s girlfriend, told police he was inside Stars & Strikes earlier in the night and was very intoxicated.

For some reason, he became angry, smashed his cell phone on the ground and said he was walking home, the woman told police.

According to the incident report, the officer called out to the man, but he suddenly stopped talking and was not able to be located.

Gwinnett Fire rescue crews were called in to help search. After about an hour, he was located hundreds of feet away from a manhole inside the sewer drain. He refused to come out several times.

When he was told a K-9 unit was on the scene, the man wrapped his shirt around his forearm and taunted officers to let the dog loose, according to the incident report.

Eventually, the man was persuaded to come close enough to the manhole to be quickly grabbed by police.

The man fought as he was being pulled out, and was tasered as he tried to get back in the hole, the incident report stated. That allowed officers to get him out of the hole. The man was tasered again when he struggled with police.

According to the incident report, the man was cited for disorderly conduct and charged with obstructing law enforcement, a misdemeanor.

There was no indication in the incident report on what made the man so angry.
