Cereal Is One Of The Worst Foods For Your Waistline And Your Health!

You probably grew up on breakfast cereal. I think we all did. But, I would not dream of eating breakfast cereal today.

Once you learn how cereals are manufactured, and some of the studies done on cereals, you may think twice about eating it, no matter how “convenient” it is.  In the manufacturing of ALL cereals, the grains are exposed to very high temperatures and very high pressure.  The machine used is called an extruder, which takes a slurry of grain and water and forces it through tiny openings that make the little trendy shapes created by the manufacturer.  After being shaped, the cereal is sprayed with a coat of oil and sugar to give the cereal the “crunch” before going soggy in your breakfast bowl.  This extrusion process destroys the nutrients, especially the proteins.  It even wipes out the synthetic vitamins the manufacturers add to make the cereal appear more nutritious. 

Studies have been done going back to 1942 with mice, comparing their longevity by groups given cereal versus other groups given just water and synthetic nutrients.  The mice eating the cereal died much sooner than the other group fed no cereal.  In one study at the University of Michigan, control groups of mice were given Corn Flakes and compared to another group that was fed the cardboard from the Corn Flakes box.  The group eating the cardboard outlived the others.  Even more revealing, the mice who ate the cornflakes showed signs of violent behavior, threw fits, were anxious, agitated and eventually went into convulsions.  We didn't hear about these studies.

What upsets me is that the cereal manufacturers continue to market their cereal as healthy.  Yogurt Berry Crunch from a popular brand sounds healthy.  It claims 25 grams of whole grains and rich in antioxidants.  Here’s the truth: This cereal contains 51 ingredients, including 10 sources of sugar.  It also contains SEVEN corn derived ingredients, likely from GMO corn, including corn starch and corn syrup.  It is loaded with inflammatory wheat ingredients and gluten, not to mention two of the worst oils you can consume, canola and soybean oil

All grains should be avoided, as much as we love our breads.  Refined grains, especially whole grains bind with minerals and vitamins in our body to keep it from providing the nutrition our body uses.  So, any of the vitamins added to grain products, or your multivitamin supplement will do your body no good if you are eating grain products.  You don’t hear this from the food companies.  They lead us to believe that “whole grains” are really good for us; even heart healthy!

So, what to eat for breakfast for all you breakfast eaters?  Try something with protein like eggs with veggies, or a protein smoothie.  Till next time.
