Choosing the Right Radon Mitigation Contractor

Finding an elevated level of radon in your home is no cause for alarm. Lowering the levels can be done by following these simple steps.

First, you should verify that the test results you received were completed by a certified measurement technician. Georgia currently does not require state certification to conduct radon testing but we suggest that prior to beginning any home repair you verify that  the test was completed by a professional who holds a national certification from an accredited association such as National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) – National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) or the National Radon Safety Board (NRSB), and that if they used their own testing equipment that they are certified as a “Analytical Service Provider”, not just “Standard Services” . Often we see homeowners install mitigation systems as a result of poor testing procedures in homes that did not actually need these systems.

Next, you should verify your test results were accurate by insuring the testing equipment meets current EPA standards and the equipment calibration has been properly maintained. One way to ensure these requirements are satisfied is to request that Radalink radon monitors are used during your test. Inspectors who use this equipment are among the best in the industry and are part of the largest network of licensed radon professionals in the country.

Once you have confidence in the test result you are acting on, you should visit www.radongas.org  and select “Find a Radon Professional”. This list will give you the option to locate a measurement or mitigation professional in your area.

As with any home repair project, we suggest that you select a minimum of three contractors to bid on your repair. Be sure to have them explain what they will include in their package and have it detailed in the quotation. Mitigation  contractors will have different approaches to accomplish the reduction of radon in your home.  Also, make sure you get a copy of their warranty and that you review it carefully.

Once the mitigation system is installed it must operate for a minimum of 24 hours prior to re-testing for radon. The most accurate and easiest to read post-mitigation test are supplied by measurement technicians that use Radalink Continuous Radon Monitors (CRM). This test should be by an independent measurement company.

The EPA recommends that you have you home tested for radon every two years to ensure the mitigation system is functioning properly.
