Crazy winter! The new year started off with cold temperatures for a vast majority of the country. So far, I've averaged 33.9F for the month. This is the sixth year I've kept records here and to date, this January is the coldest by far, beating 2010's 36.5F average by 2.6F. We'll warm up a little today and Monday, going above the normal by about 5-6 degrees, but then trending back below normal by midweek.
There is a chance for some mixed precipitation Tue/Wed but whatever falls will be on the light side. The models are mixed on the trajectory of the energy diving down in the 500 mb flow, so we'll need to wait a day or two longer before it becomes clear. In this fast flow, the models have a hard time with the track, timing and intensity of these little pieces of energy, and in the wintertime, especially here in Georgia, track, timing, and intensity means everything.
Cold air moves back in later in the week and the Euro has been pushing this idea for a while. I noticed the NWS has dropped the daytime highs considerably on Saturday (~40F) and I wouldn't be surprised to see them dropped even further as the week goes on. More to come on this...
Did you get enough rain? Here at DaculaWeather.com, we had 2.52" of rain over the two day period, with 2.08" falling yesterday. Nice to start the year with a surplus of water! There are still plenty of creeks and streams in the metro area that are flooded, and with an additional 0.25 - 1.00" on Monday, flooding will be a concern again.
And so you know, I have a page for river and lake levels in Georgia, as well as a Recreational Lake forecast page. Check it out!
Just another reminder, during weather episodes like the one we had yesterday, I have instant updates on my Facebook page. I pull information from multiple sources and relay that information to you almost instantly, something that is not easy or practical to do here.
