  • Alcova Elementary will host a Jumpstart “Read for the Record” event on Oct. 21 from 9 to 11 a.m. The annual reading celebration highlights the need for early education in America by mobilizing adults and children to set arecord for the largest shared reading experience. Guest reader Mrs. Quad Webb-Lunceford, of the TV show “Married to Medicine,” will read to Alcova kindergarten and first-grade students. More than 2 million people around the world will read “Bunny Cakes” by Rosemary Wells in support of Jumpstart’s mission of helping to prepare every child who enters school to be successful.   • Dyer Elementary will host a visit from U.S. Representative Rob Woodall on Oct. 21 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Representative Woodall will speak to students about patriotism and civic awareness in a town-hall style meeting. For more information, call 770-963-6214.
  • GCPS’ Community-Based Mentoring Program is hosting its 5th annual Golf Tournament on Oct. 13, at The Château Course at Château Élan Golf Club in Braselton. All proceeds will benefit student mentoring, student leadership workshops, goal-setting activities, educational field trips, college visits, and an awards dinner. The registration fee of $100 includes tournament entry, breakfast, entry in the Hole In One contest and the Longest Drive contest, and an awards luncheon. The deadline to enter is Oct. 3.
