Disease Is A Matter Of Cause And Effect, Not Luck!

While everyone agrees our current health care system is not working, the big question now is whether or not Obama care is the answer.  There are many people that can’t afford health insurance.  This is a huge, complex problem.  I had the opportunity to live in the UK for almost three years.  Their National Health System was far inferior to what we know in the US.  Elective surgery took years and tax paid by the average Brit was extremely high by our standards.

My concern with Obama care, like all socialized medicine systems, is that it is based on the false premise that health outcomes are a matter of pure luck.  The belief is that disease just “randomly strikes people”.  Individuals have nothing to do with their own health. This belief fits nicely with the financial interests of Big Drug companies, Doctors and Hospitals.  And, it puts power in the hands of corporations, medical personnel and now Government.

Unfortunately, for those of us that take charge of our own health by choosing to eat healthy foods, invest in exercise and get vastly improved health outcomes, we will be punished with higher taxes.  Obama care is actually designed to punish you for making wise choices about your health.

A sensible health care system should reward people for making smarter investments in their own health. In a sensible system, there would be a strong economic disincentive for living a lifestyle of eating junk food and sitting on the couch all day. Criticizing people for making poor decisions about their own health is strongly condemned in today’s upside-down culture.

With all the uncertainty about health care I continue to preach about the financial and well-being benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  As insurance premiums increase more people will be purchasing insurance with higher deductibles.  One trip to the hospital with a disease will be a very expensive proposition when you include the deductible, co-pay and other meds and treatments not covered by your insurance plan.  This cost would pay for a lot of gym memberships, and healthy foods.

Also, it is really nice to go to the doctor only once per year for your annual physical and not have to purchase any prescription or non-prescription drugs.  Of course, what is even better is to just feel great when lots of other people you know think that feeling bad is natural and just comes with age.  Till next time
