There are all kinds of doors, sliding doors, hinged doors, revolving doors, fire doors, panic room doors, safe doors, and the list goes on.
Generally, a door has a single purpose. A door provides boundaries. It separates what’s inside the door from what is outside. Doors may be painted, they may be layered with metal, they may be totally metal, or they may be made entirely of glass except for the hardware. Doors may be inviting, they may be deterring, take a castle door made of heavy timbers, hung with massive hinges, and protected with sharpened metal. Doors have been used as metaphors—usually of hope. Rev. McNeal who preached many a funeral at Hebron during his 33 years of service using the metaphor of death as passing into “just another room.” Using that metaphor, Mr. McNeal both comforted the grieving families but also gave them hope of our faith-tradition.

While you are at it, think about the metaphorical doors that provide a structure of boundaries in your life. Count up the major ones. Think about those doors, and imagine where your would be without them.
