Funeral Services Set for World War II Veteran

John Calvin Pierce served in the United States Army at Normandy, Ardennes, Central Europe, Northern France and the Rhineland.

John Calvin Pierce, age 92, of Dacula, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 25. 

Pierce was born April 10, 1919 in Murrayville, Ga.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army as a Private First Class Battery B 231 ST of the Armored Field Artillery Battalion. He served his country from April 4, 1942 to October 29, 1945. He was in battles and campaigns in Normandy, Ardennes, Central Europe, Northern France and the Rhineland. He served as a gun crewman in the Light Artillery 844.  He received the American Theatre Service Ribbon, EAMET Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

He retired as a window foreman from Georgia Window Company in Powder Springs. Before retiring, he worked in the building industry as a carpenter supervisor and window foreman. 

Pierce was a member and former trustee of . He was an avid Braves Fan and enjoyed NASCAR Racing. He loved to spend time with his two little Jack Russell Terriers, Patty Cake and Jeep.

Pierce was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Fannie Swansey Pierce; parents, Hubert and Hester Pierce; brother, L. D. Pierce; sisters, Nell Lawson and Idell Mathis; and grandson, Russell Scott Maddox.  He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Larry Maddox of Buford; granddaughters, Yvette and Russell Lowe of Auburn, Ala. and Kelly and Anthony Hensley of Buford; great-granddaughters, Annelise Lowe, Molly Lowe and Ella Pierce Hensley; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 3 p.m. at Duncan Creek Congregational Church with Rev. James D. Dillin officiating. Interment will follow at Duncan Creek Congregational Church Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and from 6-9 p.m.
