Grandfather Accepts Plea Deal in Death of 23-Month-Old

Luis Efrain Torres was to stand trial for the shooting death of grandson.

A Gwinnett County man accused in the shooting death of his 23-month-old grandson in 2013 has accepted a plea offer, according to a news release.

The Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office said Luis Efrain Torres pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter as part of the agreement. His trial on charges of felony murder and aggravated assault (two counts) was to start Monday, July 6.

Torres was sentenced to 20 years, to serve 15 years in confinement, the DA’s office said.

Torres was arrested after an August 2013 incident in unincorporated Lilburn during which police said he argued with then fired shots at the boy’s father, Patch previously reported. One of those bullets struck the little boy.

The toddler was found dead in the driveway, only weeks away from his second birthday.

The case was heard by Judge Karen Beyers and prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Samantha Routh.
