Gwinnett Fire Calls: Apartment Fire, Smoke Odor, Lightning Strike

Pan of grease ignites while cooking, lightning strikes causes small fires, family of 8 displaced.

The following is a recap of Monday response activity from Gwinnett Fire (submitted by Capt. Tommy Rutledge):

APARTMENT FIRE

Firefighters responded at 11:16a.m. to an occupant report of an apartment fire in the 200 block of East Crogan Street, NE in Lawrenceville. Crews found a small fire in the oven that was already out on arrival. The occupant was home cooking at the time when a pan of grease ignited. The fire was contained to the oven and was quickly doused by a maintenance worker with a portable fire extinguisher before the fire department arrived. Crews checked for extension and removed smoke from the apartment. There were no injuries reported. The occupant was not displaced and the scene was turned over to maintenance personnel at Magnolia Village Apartments.

SMOKE ODOR IN RESIDENCE:

Firefighters responded at 2:30p.m. to an occupant report of a smoke odor inside a residence in the 4000 block of Patch Court, SW in (unincorporated) Snellville. The caller advised that lightning hit the home and sparked a fire behind the clothes dryer. The fire was quickly doused by the occupant with a portable fire extinguisher before the fire department arrived. The fire was contained to lint particles inside the dryer vent and caused minimal damage. There were no injuries reported. The occupants were not displaced from the home.

HOUSE FIRE:

Firefighters responded at 2:31p.m. to an occupant report of a lightning strike and fire at a mobile home in the 3600 block of Everson Road, in (unincorporated) Snellville. Crews found a smoldering fire in the wall and floor of a utility room on the back-side of the residence. The fire was quickly extinguished by first-due companies and caused minor damage to the room. Occupants were home at the time of the fire and reported hearing a loud popping sound and the power blinking. The Red Cross was contacted to assist the family, 3-adults and 5-children, displaced by the damage. Firefighters worked fast and kept the fire from spreading past the area or origin. One occupant was assessed by paramedics for minor exposure to smoke and was released at the scene. There were no other injuries reported.
