Jobless Rate in Gwinnett County Rose in May

The unemployment rate in Gwinnett County rose in May, according to data released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor.

The rate in Gwinnett climbed four-tenths of a percentage point to 5.4 percent last month, up from 5.0 in April. The rate in May 2014 was 6.2, the data showed.

Rates for Gwinnett cities with populations over 25,000 also were released: Duluth, 5.9 percent (up from 5.8 in April); Lawrenceville, 7.0 (6.4); and Peachtree Corners, 3.3 (2.9).

The labor department said metro Atlanta’s rate also was up three-tenths of a point in May -- 5.9, up from 5.6 in April, but considerably less than May 2014 (6.9).

The rate rose as the labor force grew by 23,594 to 2,831,311, and while the new entrants are searching for work, they are counted as unemployed, the agency said.

Metro Gainesville had the lowest area jobless rate at 5.1 percent, while the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest at 7.7 percent.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for May was 6.3 percent, up from a revised 6.2 percent in April. It was 7.3 percent in May 2014.
