The potential for contamination was uncovered by a single routine sample taken at a retail store by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, which revealed the finished product tested positive for the bacteria.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Healthy people often suffer only short-term symptoms like fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

It may cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

So far, no illnesses due to the products have been confirmed by health authorities.

The product in question bears “BEST IF USED BY” dates between August 7, 2016 (8/7/16) through August 19, 2016 (8/19/16). It is in either a clear plastic container or in Styrofoam trays wrapped with clear plastic film.

In a news release, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it, and Country Fresh, are investigating what caused the problem.

Customers who purchased any of these products are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
