New Addition to Ivy Creek Greenway Opens

The newest section adds 1.5 miles of trail to the existing walking and biking path located near Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center.

As the leaves begin to fall this season, countless Gwinnett residents are getting outside to walk and run the abundant trail systems found throughout the county.

Beginning Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, walkers and runners will have a new trail to experience along the beautiful Ivy Creek Greenway.

The newest section of the Ivy Creek Greenway adds 1.5 miles of trail to the existing walking and biking path located near the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center (EHC) as well as the Mall of Georgia in Buford. This new section includes two boardwalks, an overlook, a 270-foot long cable-stayed bridge and a nature observation trail. In addition, a restroom building that serves the greenway and other patrons of the EHC was built as a part of this project.

The trail can be accessed from the EHC, at 2020 Clean Water Drive, Buford, Ga. The project was partially funded by a grant from the Federal Highway Administration Transportation Enhancement Program.

“This latest section of the greenway meanders through beautiful woodlands and over several stream valleys. The trail provides users an opportunity to view the Ivy Creek from the overlook deck before descending to cross the suspension bridge spanning the stream. The wildlife observation trail opens previously inaccessible woodlands for hikers to explore,” stated Grant Guess, Division Director of Parks and Recreation Project Administration.

Gwinnett County’s Greenway Master Plan calls for the new section of trail to eventually connect to the Ivy Creek Greenway path in George Pierce Park.

The Ivy Creek Greenway is open from dawn to dusk each day of the week. For additional information regarding the Ivy Creek Greenway or the EHC, please visit www.gwinnettEHC.org.
