ICYMI: Officer Injured With His Own Baton Identified

Gwinnett Police say Jordan Wenslow is currently resting and recovering with family after the Dacula attack.

DACULA, GA -- Gwinnett County Police have identified an officer who suffered severe cuts and a likely concussion after being attacked with his own baton.

Officer Jordan Wenslow is resting and recovering with family after what police call "traumatic injuries" sustained in a scuffle with a burglary suspect early Wednesday.

Wenslow was chasing the suspect shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday. When he caught him behind a building on Village Broad Street in Dacula, a fight broke out and Wenslow's police baton fell out.

Police say the suspect, 25-year-old David Gill, then took the baton and struck Wenslow several times in the face and head.

The blows caused Wenslow to bleed profusely, get dizzy and have trouble seeing, a police report said. Still, he was able to pull his handgun and get the suspect in custody.

Police say video surveillance discovered later Wednesday morning linked Gill to a burglary at the Fast Trip convenience store at 2115 Winder Highway.

They say video shows Gill, wearing the same clothes he had on when he was arrested, walking across the parking lot shortly before 2 a.m., throwing a rock through the store window and climbing through the window to steal several cartons of cigarettes and lighters.

He faces charges including aggravated assault against a law-enforcement officer, felony obstruction of a law-enforcement officer, possession of a weapon during a crime, giving a false name to law enforcement and burglary.

Wenslow was hired by Gwinnett County Police on July 7, 2014. He graduated from the Gwinnett County Police Academy on December 18, 2014.

A news release said Wenslow had about 10 staples inserted into his head Wednesday to fix his wounds.
