Should I Get High School Senior Portraits?

A few tips about high school senior portraits.

The senior year of high school is a milestone in one’s life.  It is truly a time to remember, and that is why senior portraits have started to become more important.

Back when I was in high school (let’s just say my 20 year reunion is not that far off), most of us used a photography studio for our portraits.  It was better than the school drape picture for sure, but it was still mostly in front of a backdrop, in a studio – and it still did not really reflect how I saw myself.   I think we were fairly unique that we even used a photography studio – most people I talk to just had the school provided option with two poses – one with drape, one in your own outfit.

The rise of natural light and lifestyle photography have really opened up the options for today’s seniors.  Most high schools still require the drape picture through their provided photographer for the yearbook – but many seniors are looking for more.  They want a session that really reflects not only who they are, but who they aspire to be.   Social media really helps them see the different styles and ideas out there, giving them the opportunity to research the right photographer for them.

As a parent, I know senior portrait sessions can seem like a big investment.  However, this is the last year of them really being at home, under your wings, and I promise it is a time of life you are going to want to treasure forever.  My parents still have 16x20s of my brother and I hanging on their wall from our senior sessions – don’t you want those pictures to be the true reflection of your child?

If you decide to invest in senior portraits – just be sure to find a photographer that fits your style and your vision.  It is not just about the price, but about someone who will work with you to give you that treasured portrait.   Most photographers have portfolios of images on their websites in addition to Facebook accounts and blogs – these are helpful tools to find the right one.  In addition, be sure to give them a call or email with them – you want to make sure you are comfortable with your choice of photographer.

Lastly, do not wait too late in the year to decide you want to capture these portraits.  The end of the year brings prom, senior special events, graduation and more - it is very fun and very busy.  The fall is a great time to capture those senior images before the year gets too chaotic.

Congratulations on having a high school senior!  I promise you will be happy with your decision to document this important milestone.
