Traffic Detail Honors Late Officer, Arrests 11

Gwinnett Police officers, many of whom worked on their day off, made 11 arrests and wrote 109 citations during the annual detail to honor an officer who was killed in the line of duty.

The Officer Chris Magill Traffic Detail included aggressive traffic enforcement between 9 p.m. Friday, May 29, and 6 a.m. Saturday May 30 along I-85, I-985 and Ga. 316, police said in a news release. The detail included a sobriety checkpoint in the Norcross area.
Gwinnett PD began the annual detail in 2008 in honor of Officer Magill, who died on May 23, 1993 when he struck by a drunk driver. Magill was waiting on a tow truck to impound a vehicle from a DUI arrest when another drunk driver ran into his patrol car, killing him.

Here’s a breakdown of the charges, according to the news release:
- DUI: 8
- Drug-Related: 2
- Suspended Licenses: 3
- Speeding: 14
- Move Over Violations: 55
- Other: 27
Around 20 officers and a radio dispatcher worked the detail.
“The Gwinnett County Police Department is committed to educating motorists about the dangers of committing traffic violations,” the news release stated. “Through the use of traffic enforcement, we are helping to assure that all motorists get to their intended destinations as safely as possible.”
